Theme Song

 Theme Song

Music has played a very major role in my life. Many memories, both good and bad, have a musical association for me. I think when you take the time to understand the lyrics of the song, you can find out more about yourself and your views on life. When trying to choose a theme song, I struggled with selecting just one. I believe that I embody many aspects of various songs and genres, and am grateful that I am capable of seeing parts of myself in a multitude of lights. I love to travel, my bags are always packed, and the feeling of freedom is something so pivotal to who I am. I believe there's more to life than the sole aspect of working day in and day out. I also am a strong believer in the idea that you can learn more through travel, than in a classroom. In that aspect, I do not mean traveling to five star resorts and luxurious beaches, I mean travel to touch every part of the world; the good, the bad, and the ugly, meet a variety of people, and see so many forms of life.

While searching for a song to embody these varying aspects of myself, I got stuck on Chris Stapleton's "Starting Over". This is a Contemporary Country song, with a rustic, hopeful tune. It projects the idea that you cannot move forward if you stay stuck in the same places, whether that be physical or mental. It allows the listener to envision a 'better place' regardless of where that place may be. A verse in the song that really stands out to me is "This might not be an easy time, there's rivers to cross and hills to climb, some days we might fall apart, and some nights might be cold and dark, but nobody wins afraid of losin', and the hard roads are the ones worth choosin', someday we'll look back and smile, and know it was worth every mile."

For me, that line is very prominent. It allows the listener to know that although life might not always be easy, but sometimes the hard decisions we make may be ultimately the greatest choices for ourselves. Stapleton talks about his ability to simply pack up and go. He has enough faith in himself to simply take a shot in the dark and make the most of it. I was able to relate to that. By moving eight hours away to a college I was not sure on, knowing no one, unsure of my major, I really had a lot on the line. In all honesty, High Point is not for me, but I learned a lot about who I am through that. I find relations through Stapleton's song because he mentions being unsure of the risk he takes and questioning if they will "float", and I feel the same way about many choices I have had the capability of making.

For me, I think that "Starting Over" is a good reflection of myself and an incredible reminder of the person I always want to be. I find value in the plasticity of life, and how easy it truly can be to make positive changes in your life regardless of the things you've been through.

I am excited for what High Point has to offer, and the opportunities I create for myself due to that.

Religious Argument of Slavery

Deciphering Religious Text's Opinion on Slavery Though widely popularized in the United States during the 1800s, the concept and use of slavery has been around since the biblical times.  While examining the Bible, Torah, and the Quran we’ve noticed multiple contradictions on the topic of slavery. Some sources condemn it, while others condone it.  In Leviticus 25:44-46 of the Bible, it states, “As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly” ( Open Bible ). This source would condone the buying and selling of slaves, one may even s...

Speech Theories

Speech Theories      Free Speech is monumental and valuable to the American culture; quite frankly, it makes America, America. After evaluating the eight speech theories used by scholars to describe and understand the premise of free speech in the United States, I was able to conclude which was the most valuable to American society. The eight speech theories are, Marketplace of Ideas, Participation in Self-Government, Stable Change, Individual Self Fulfillment, Check on Governmental Power, Promote Tolerance, Promote Innovation, and Protect Dissent. The theory that I found to be most prominent and valuable, was Individual Self Fulfillment.      The speech theory of Individual Self Fulfillment is described as the ability to express one's individuality and create their own identity. This privilege typically allows people to find others with similar likes, dislikes, and interests. This allows people to make meaningful connections resulting in ha...
