News Sources

With so many available news sources literally right at our fingertips, it's important to understand the validity of each source. By taking a deeper look into the places we get our news from, it allows us to have a clearer picture of how the facts we read may be altered, skewed, or changed to fit a certain agenda. Some news sources are more reliable, straight-forward, and clear cut than others, these are the ideal sources. Below are five places I receive news from, and a short conclusion regarding each.

1. NewsBreak

I primarily receive a lot of news from the NewsBreak app. This app is relatively unknown, it provides a lot of local smaller stories. It allows for me to still feel connected to my home town while being eight hours away. Due to NewsBreak focusing on a lot of smaller news stories, it is easy to miss some of the major worldly events happening. Along with that, since it is relatively unknown, I am unsure how reliable this news source is.

2. Facebook

With apps like Facebook so easily accessible and time consuming, it is incredibly easy for me to receive a lot of news from them. Facebook will typically have most of the major news stories, but the stories are presented in a light that leans to the left and negatively views anything that may be slightly Conservatively affiliated. Along with this, Facebook is known to censor many news stories as well as politicians. This censorship makes it nearly impossible to gather the full truth of a news story on Facebook.

3. BBC News

I also frequent the BBC News website. Since it is a British news source, it gives less biased opinions on American news, allowing for our issues to be viewed in a third party light. This general overview allows me to get a better opinion on where I stand on many issues, since it generally shown with facts rather than skewed opinions. BBC News is also helpful when receiving news regarding issues based in the United Kingdom since many of the US news sources focus solely on problems on American soil.

4. Fox News

Another news platform I often visit is Fox News. Fox News leans right, providing an often times different view than many mainstream news sources. With watching both Fox News and listening to main stream media, it can be useful when deciphering the truth. I tend to watch Fox News especially when it is nearing an election due to the more clear cut information, rather than pure slander of the opposing political party.

5. Pocono Record

Lastly, I use the Pocono Record as a news source. The Pocono Record is based out of my hometown of Stroudsburg. It provides very local news ranging from school board opinions to local crime and even obituaries. I tend to seek out the Pocono Record when trying to find information regarding very local issues that major news platforms would not be covering. This also allows me to be connected to home regardless of where I am.

Speech Theories

Speech Theories      Free Speech is monumental and valuable to the American culture; quite frankly, it makes America, America. After evaluating the eight speech theories used by scholars to describe and understand the premise of free speech in the United States, I was able to conclude which was the most valuable to American society. The eight speech theories are, Marketplace of Ideas, Participation in Self-Government, Stable Change, Individual Self Fulfillment, Check on Governmental Power, Promote Tolerance, Promote Innovation, and Protect Dissent. The theory that I found to be most prominent and valuable, was Individual Self Fulfillment.      The speech theory of Individual Self Fulfillment is described as the ability to express one's individuality and create their own identity. This privilege typically allows people to find others with similar likes, dislikes, and interests. This allows people to make meaningful connections resulting in ha...

Trespassing Across America

Trespassing Across America - A Journey to Fight the Pipeline      Ken Ilgunas, an activist and environmentalist trekked the country in hopes of raising awareness for climate change and the dangers of the  Keystone XL Pipeline. The Keystone XL Pipeline runs for 1,700 miles and spans from Alberta, Canada to Port Arthur, Texas.      This idea of hiking the pipeline was not something Ken originally started out with. Ken explained that he had always been an  environmentalist, and as he watched the world literally burn and begin to fall apart in front of him, he decided he must do something. He was 28 and living in Deadhorse, Alaska with his friend Liam. He was washing dishes and knew that he needed to live a life with an impact. His friend Liam suggested they hike the pipeline, in an attempt to see the environmental impact it caused, firsthand. This idea alone was enough to spark something in Ken. A short time later, he hitchhiked out of Dea...
